You wore your automatic watch yesterday, set it down overnight, and found it stopped the next morning. Does it need service? Not necessarily.

An automatic watch does not run forever simply because it winds itself. It stores a limited amount of energy, and the energy it gains depends on how long—and how actively—you wear it. In many cases, a stopped watch is behaving normally because its power reserve has run down.

This guide explains how automatic winding works, what power reserve really means, how to restart a stopped watch safely, and which warning signs justify a professional inspection.

How an Automatic Watch Powers Itself

Inside an automatic watch is a weighted component called a rotor. As your wrist moves, the rotor turns. The winding system transfers that motion to the mainspring, which stores energy. The mainspring then releases energy through the movement to keep the watch running.

The basic sequence is:

Wrist motion → rotor movement → mainspring winding → stored energy → running watch

Automatic winding is convenient, but it is not unlimited. If the watch receives less energy than it uses, its stored reserve gradually falls until the movement stops.

What Does “Power Reserve” Mean?

Power reserve is the approximate length of time a fully wound watch can run without receiving additional energy.

Depending on the movement, a watch may offer roughly 40 hours, 70 hours, several days, or more. Do not assume that all automatic watches will run for the same period. Even watches from one brand can use movements with very different reserves.

A 40-hour watch removed on Friday evening may stop during the weekend. A 70-hour watch has a better chance of still running on Monday morning. Those estimates, however, assume that the mainspring was adequately wound when the watch came off your wrist.

If the watch began with only a partial reserve, it may stop much sooner than its published specification suggests.

Five Common Reasons an Automatic Watch Stops

1. It Did Not Receive Enough Initial Winding

Putting a completely stopped watch straight onto your wrist may not provide a stable reserve quickly—especially if you spend most of the day at a desk. The watch can begin ticking but still have only a small amount of stored energy.

If the movement supports hand-winding, start it according to the model’s manual before wearing it.

2. You Did Not Wear It Long Enough—or Move Enough

An automatic watch responds to motion, not simply to being on your wrist. A short day of wear, limited arm movement, or a mostly stationary routine may not generate enough rotor activity to replace the energy being consumed.

3. Its Power Reserve Simply Ran Out

If a watch operates normally and then stops after sitting unused for a period close to its rated reserve, that is usually normal behavior. Compare the elapsed time with the manufacturer’s specification before assuming the movement has a problem.

4. Magnetism or Shock Affected the Movement

Strong magnetic fields from magnets, speakers, magnetic phone accessories, and some electronics can affect mechanical timekeeping. A significant impact can also disturb movement components. Sudden large timing errors or stopping after exposure or impact deserve attention.

5. The Watch Needs Inspection or Service

A watch that repeatedly stops shortly after proper winding may have a winding-system, mainspring, lubrication, or movement issue. New grinding sensations at the crown, unusual rotor noise, or a sharply reduced reserve are stronger reasons to seek professional help.

How to Wind a Stopped Automatic Watch Safely

The correct crown position, direction, and recommended number of turns vary by movement. Treat the following as a general sequence and use your watch’s official manual as the final authority.

  1. Remove the watch from your wrist.
  2. If it has a screw-down crown, unlock the crown first.
  3. Confirm that the crown is in the winding position.
  4. Turn it slowly in the direction specified by the manufacturer.
  5. Stop if you feel abnormal resistance, grinding, or binding.
  6. Set the time and date as directed, then secure a screw-down crown again.

How Many Turns Does It Need?

There is no universal number.

Rolex, for example, advises a minimum of 25 turns for an adequate partial wind when restarting a stopped watch. A Seiko manual for a different movement does not give a turn count at all: it explains that the mainspring becomes fully wound when the watch is worn for twelve hours a day over three to five days, and that a full reserve on that movement runs approximately 72 hours. These examples illustrate why generic advice such as “always wind it 20 times” should not replace the movement-specific manual.

Many automatic movements use a slipping attachment that helps prevent the mainspring from being over-wound when fully charged. That protection does not mean there is any benefit in turning the crown indefinitely. Wind smoothly and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Should You Shake an Automatic Watch to Start It?

Some manufacturers describe gently swinging a stopped watch from side to side to get the balance and rotor moving. Gentle motion is different from vigorous shaking.

If your automatic movement supports manual winding, using the crown according to the instructions generally provides a more controlled and measurable way to establish an initial reserve. Avoid snapping your wrist or shaking the watch aggressively.

Use a Seven-Day Test Instead of Guessing

If your watch keeps stopping, a short log can reveal whether the cause is limited wear or a real mechanical problem.

Start with the manufacturer’s winding procedure, set the watch to a reliable reference time, and log it for seven days. If the watch has a power-reserve indicator, record its position when you remove the watch each night.

When Should You Have the Watch Inspected?

Contact the seller, an authorized service center, or a trusted watchmaker if:

  • The watch repeatedly stops within hours after being wound according to its manual.
  • Its usable reserve has become noticeably shorter than before.
  • It developed a large timing error or stopped after a strong impact.
  • Winding feels gritty, unusually stiff, or inconsistent.
  • The rotor suddenly makes loud scraping or knocking sounds.
  • You see condensation or moisture beneath the crystal.

Visible moisture deserves prompt attention. Repeated winding will not solve a failed seal or water intrusion.

Do You Need a Watch Winder?

For most people rotating between one or two ordinary automatic watches, a watch winder is a convenience rather than a necessity. If the watch stops, you can wind and reset it.

A winder can be more useful for a complicated calendar watch that is tedious to reset, or for a watch you wear frequently but not continuously. If you use one, choose a model that allows its direction and turns-per-day setting to match the movement’s requirements. More rotation is not automatically better.

The Practical Bottom Line

When an automatic watch stops, check its energy supply before assuming it is broken:

  1. Confirm the model’s stated power reserve.
  2. Give it the manufacturer-recommended initial wind.
  3. Track your wear time and activity.
  4. Secure the crown and limit magnetism and impact.
  5. Seek inspection if proper winding does not solve repeated stopping.

Understanding this cycle makes an automatic watch easier to own. The goal is not to keep it moving at any cost, but to know what normal behavior looks like—and when the behavior has genuinely changed.
